eXplorist X10 Outdoor Map Download Instructions


Please make sure your Magellan eXplorist handheld software is up to date before attempting to download any applicable detailed Maps. Get the latest software by clicking here.

How to download and install outdoor maps


For step by step written instructions scroll down this page
  1. To get your map, double click on the map link provided in the purchase confirmation email from Magellan. Select Save to Your Desktop.
  2. When your map is downloaded, an icon will appear on your desktop. Double click on the file to begin the map installation process.
  3. The Magellan MAP Install screen is displayed. You have the option of changing the directory where the map will be saved by selecting the "Change Map Dir" button. Select the "Download Map" to begin the transfer.

    NOTE: If an internet connection error appears you will need click on "Download Info" in the screen below. A message will appear indicating information was copied to your clipboard. Open up a text document and select paste, then copy the URL info from your text document into you internet browser to start the map download process.



  4. The map file is extremely large and can take hours to download, even with high speed connections. The download can be stopped at anytime by selecting the "Cancel" button. If you cancel the download and want to start it again, double click the map downloader executable file again, as was done in step 2. The transfer of the map will pick up from the point it was at when you cancelled.
  5. When the transfer is complete the downloader will verify that the file transfer was successful.
  6. After the file has been verified, you will need to authorize the map. Select the "Authorize Map" button to continue.



  7. The downloader will go through the process of authorizing the map and saving the map to the directory indicated.
  8. The downloader will display a message indicating Authorization of map Complete (shown below). You will need to close this window. Once this window is closed your map will appear in a folder. If it does not appear you can browse to the location under Map directory. The default location should be under a folder labeled “My GPS” under "My Documents"


Transferring the Map to internal memory (eXplorist 310)


NOTE: The eXplorist 310 has 500mb of internal memory available. In some cases you may not be able to load more than one region and will need to delete a previous region to free up memory.

  1. Turn the GPS receiver on.
  2. After the device has completed the start up process, connect the GPS receiver to your PC using a standard USB cable.
  3. Select "Connect to PC".
  4. Double click on the "My Computer" icon found on your desktop. You will find that there a device displayed, "MAGELLAN".



  5. Double click on the MAGELLAN icon to view its directory.
  6. Double click on the "MAP" folder to reveal its contents.
  7. Drop and drag the files that were downloaded and displayed in step 8 to this directory.
  8. When the transfer is complete you can disconnect your receiver from your computer.
  9. Press the BACK button to view the Main Menu.
  10. Select the Tools icon.
  11. Select "Settings"
  12. Select "Maps"
  13. Select the map that you have just downloaded. A checkmark will appear next to the name indicating that it is active. Exit out of the Map screen and Main Menu to see your newly acquired map on your GPS receiver.
Transferring the Map to a microSD card (eXplorist 510/610/710)


  1. Remove the battery door and batteries from your GPS receiver. Open the cover to the mini SD card tray. Insert a 4GB mini SD card into the tray and close the cover. Replace the batteries and reinstall the battery door. (Additional information about installing a mini SD card can be found in the Quick Start Guide supplied with your receiver or in the User Manual that can be accessed from www.magellangps.com\support.
  2. Turn the receiver on.
  3. After it has completed the boot up process, connect the receiver to your PC using a standard USB cable.
  4. Select "Connect to PC".
  5. Double click on the "My Computer" icon found on your desktop. You will find that there are two new devices displayed, "MAGELLAN" and "Removable Disk".



  6. Double click on "Removable Disk". (This is the mini SD card you installed in the receiver.)
  7. Drop and drag the two files that were downloaded and displayed in step 8 to the removable disk.
  8. When the transfer is complete you can disconnect your receiver from your computer.
  9. The final step is to activate the map in your receiver. Restart your receiver. After the boot process is complete, access the Four Corner Menu screen. Select the Main Menu icon and open the Main Menu.
  10. Select the Maps icon.
  11. Use the Detailed Maps button to access any detailed maps that you have available.
  12. Select the map that you have just downloaded. A checkmark will appear next to the name indicating that it is active. Exit out of the Map function and you are ready to use your Magellan eXplorist with the newly acquired map.


Note: If you have purchased Kirsh TraX or Fishing Hot Spot maps you will need to follow the steps below.

Enabling map skin files for Map on Micro SD card
  1. Insert a Micro SD card into your GPS device and connect the device to your computer.
  2. Create a folder on the Micro SD card and name it Magellan.
  3. Open the Magellan folder and create a sub folder inside and name it skins.
  4. Locate the files that have a .msd file extension located in your SD CARD and copy them to the skins folder you just created.



  5. Disconnect your GPS from the computer to use the maps you just installed.
